Giveaway: Movie Tickets to Beautiful Creatures

Movie Ticket Giveaway!

We're giving one winner two movie tickets to Beautiful Creatures—or the movie of your choice. The prize will be awarded as a $25 Fandango digital gift card. Before we issue the prize, we'll email the winner to ask if he or she is outside Fandango's service area, in which case the winner can tell us where to purchase the movie digital gift card.

But before we get to the movie tickets, first you have to suffer through my ramblings about why I haven't read Beautiful Creatures, the book on which this move is based. (Or you could just skip to the bottom, but then you'd miss all the fun.)

Beautiful Creatures
by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl
Movie Release: February 14, 2013

Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she's struggling to conceal her power, and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.

Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town's oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.

In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.

I'm really looking forward to this movie! The trailers look dark and edgy, and that's what I want. Usually, when I'm excited about an upcoming movie that's a book adaptation, I run out and pick up the book. Not in this case.

I love young adult books, I'm learning to love contemporary romance, and I love paranormal books. Despite all this, I have a love-hate relationship (mostly annoyance) with young adult paranormal romance. Why? There's so much depth available there, between the potential romance and the paranormal creatures and young adults with emotions running high. So much complexity and feeling can potentially be inserted into a young adult paranormal romance book. But most that I've read have turned out to be disappointingly superficial.

I'm not going to point fingers at particular young adult paranormal romance books I didn't like. Instead, let's focus on the positive: I highly recommend Daughter of Smoke and Bone (by Laini Taylor), and I had a lot of fun with the Hex Hall series (by Rachel Hawkins).

What young adult paranormal romance books would you recommend? One of the entry options for the giveaway is leaving a comment, so give me a recommendation please!

See you at the theater!

  1. I have not read Beautiful Creatures either, but I may pick it up. My six year old son and I have seen the movie trailer, and he said, "Mommy, we totally have to go see that witch movie." I agreed and then we high-fived. I'm pretty sure we'll end up with a copy of the book at some point.

    2. I've heard such mixed reviews about Shatter Me. Isn't there a lot of striking out words in that book? Was that annoying, or fresh? (Or am I thinking about the wrong book?)

  4. A couple of years ago when BC just came out I helped host a "BC" read-along on:

We even picked out actors for the movie... and I must say... Ethan is NOTHING like I pictured him in the book. He's too buff in the movie. Don't ya think?

This was my week on the blog: http://fragilelittlehuman.wordpress.com/2010/01/31/beautiful-creatures-discussion-%E2%80%93-week-2/

  5. I just got the audio version of this book to listen to next week. I have heard mixed things, so I am trying not to expect much as I go into it.

BTW, Hopeless is on my list to read next week. Hope I love it as much as you did!

  7. I just started reading Beautiful Creatures. I'm only on page 102 but but so far I'm enjoying it. The Ethan and Lena are both interesting and likable characters and there is an intriguing mystery unfolding.

  8. After watching the trailer for the movie I grabbed the book and read it, which I don't normally do, usually wait to see the movie first. I really liked the story but took a long while to get into it. I realise being the first book in a series they had to set up the story and the premise, but once it got going I couldn't put it down. But I would say definitely wait and see the movie first.

Only YA series I'm really into at the moment is the Soul Screamers by Rachel Vincent. Sometimes a little heavy on the teen lust, but an amazing story by one of my fav authors.

    Love your work Ladies! :)

  10. I actually started reading Beautiful Creatures on my e-reader and it's easy to get into but not anything special. Just feel lacks that factor that would make it so amazing.

The movie promos on television made it seem a tad different from what expected.
