Character Interview: When the World Was Flat (and we were in love)

WHEN THE WORLD WAS FLAT (and we were in love)
by Ingrid Jonach
Publisher: Strange Chemistry
First Publication: September 3, 2013

Looking back, I wonder if I had an inkling that my life was about to go from ordinary to extraordinary.

When sixteen-year-old Lillie Hart meets the gorgeous and mysterious Tom Windsor-Smith for the first time, it’s like fireworks — for her, anyway. Tom looks as if he would be more interested in watching paint dry; as if he is bored by her and by her small Nebraskan town in general.

But as Lillie begins to break down the walls of his seemingly impenetrable exterior, she starts to suspect that he holds the answers to her reoccurring nightmares and to the impossible memories which keep bubbling to the surface of her mind — memories of the two of them, together and in love.

When she at last learns the truth about their connection, Lillie discovers that Tom has been hiding an earth-shattering secret; a secret that is bigger — and much more terrifying and beautiful — than the both of them. She also discovers that once you finally understand that the world is round, there is no way to make it flat again.

An epic and deeply original sci-fi romance, taking inspiration from Albert Einstein’s theories and the world-bending wonder of true love itself.

Two Fantasy Floozies is happy to welcome Ingrid Jonach, author of When the World Was Flat (and we were in love). She's here today as part of her blog tour, with a guest post, in which she interviews one of the characters from her book, Deb Hart. Deb is the mother of the main character, Lillie. Ingrid imagines Deb to be like Sissy Spacek.

Now I'm going to turn the floor over to Ingrid. At the bottom of the post, you can enter her giveaway for one of two prize packages, which each include a signed copy of her book, a pair of earrings, and a bookmark. Enjoy!

CHARACTER INTERVIEW: DEB HART

Thanks for joining us today Ms Hart.

Please, call me Deb. And thanks so much for having me. I have only been interviewed once before, but that was about my past lives.

I have heard a lot about your daughter Lillie. How would you describe your relationship?

We used to be like sisters or maybe more like best friends, because the great goddess knows I never liked my own sister. [Laughs] Lillie even came to the Rainbow Retreat with me one year with her bestfriend Jo. I remember them bathing in the river during the cleansing ritual, covered in mud from head to toe.

But it is like we are worlds apart now. [Sighs] Maybe it is because she is a teenager, but I am starting to wondering whether it is more than hormones. She told me she is having nightmares about dying, which is supposed to mean a new beginning, but... I think it may be a bad omen. I just feel it in my bones.

You seem very different to each other. Do you think Lillie has inherited anything from you?

My eyes. [Smiles] If I was chalk, my daughter would be cheese. She is very practical, whereas I... well, I live for the moment. For example, Lillie often fills in for me at Tree of Life when I want to go fire dancing. Although, last week she told me she was going to call the fire department and warn them I was going to end up burning down the State Forest.

Who of her friends is your favourite?

Jo. [Grimaces] Sorry Sylv. I love you too, but Jo is like another daughter. I think she spent most of her childhood here after her poor mother... you know. But Lillie and Jo seem to be fighting at the moment. Maybe they need to go back to the Rainbow Retreat.

How long have you lived in Green Grove? Do you like it?

I was born here – my mother actually had me in the living room! – and I have lived here my entire life, although I did think of moving before I had Lillie. I had been… [Sighs] I guess you would say I had been unlucky in love and this town is too small for a broken heart. There is no privacy for a start and there are reminders on every corner. But then I started filling my house with friends and I have never been lonely again.

What do you think of Tom?

I would rather not talk about Tom.

Can I ask why not?

[Hesitates] Because I think my daughter is headed for a broken heart too.

Let's move on to a safer topic then. What music do you like?

I like relaxation music, because I meditate three times a day. I like tracks with a melody and I am actually learning the pan pipe at the moment. Did you know it is one of the oldest musical instruments in the world? Listening to it is like listening to stories from the past thousand years.

And what about books. Do you read many books?

I mainly read non-fiction books. I guess you would call them spiritual books, about dreamology and alternative medicines. I would like to write my own book one day. Maybe on fire dancing. I could illustrate it as well.

Or you could have Lillie take photographs.

[Hesitates] Maybe. I just... I know it sounds stupid, but it was a photographer who broke my heart. It brings back bad memories when I see Lillie walking around clutching a camera all the time. I know it makes her sad that I am not more supportive, but I am a woman as well as a mother.

Going back to the fire dancing.... You do seem to have a lot of hobbies. Which is your favorite?

I love them all, but there are not enough hours in the day to do them all unfortunately. I really like wood carving. I carved a duck out of cottonwood bark once. Lillie said it looked more like a dog. [Laughs] It is still on her shelf though. I used to like basket weaving, but I could never get the hang of triple twists. I paint as well. Mainly abstracts. And I am learning Reiki at the moment. I told you there were not enough hours in the day!

Well, thanks sharing some of your time with us today Deb.

Thanks again. Lillie asked me not to do the interview, because I think she was worried I would embarrass her like last time. I am glad I did though, because it was very therapeutic.

Help ghosts, stop a thief, and try not to die…

Ghosts like Ethan Lance, who claims he was kicked out of his body when someone else jumped in. Which might be plausible—if such a thing were possible. And if Micah, Selene’s partner, didn’t pull her into an investigation of brutal murders that lead directly back to Ethan.

But when the whole mess puts Selene’s life in danger, she suddenly has very personal reasons to get Ethan’s body back. Between her uncomfortable relationship with Micah, and problems with her boss, Selene learns just how much trouble it can be when you don’t follow the rules…

INTERVIEW

1. Who are two authors that inspire your work, and why do they inspire you?

Laurell K. Hamilton because she was the first urban fantasy author I ever read. I didn’t immediately start writing urban fantasies after I started reading her work, but when I did start, I definitely learned from her how an UF works, the elements it needs, and how to make everything come together in a way that’s faced paced, interesting and also a little mysterious and sexy. Another author that has inspired me is Yukio Mishima for the way he is able to build deeply personal stories centered around people. His works taught me a lot about successful character development and that you don’t necessarily need to know someone’s entire story for them to be a believable character that you care about.

2. Which scene(s) are your favorite in your novel, Affairs of the Dead?

I enjoy my opening scene (which is in a strip club) because it shows you exactly who Selene is and how she goes about doing her job right off the bat. I also like the scene not long after that where her antics at the strip club, as well as others, get her in trouble with her boss and she gets demoted.

3. What is a unique aspect of your book that makes it stand out from other novels in its genre?

I think my book is unique in the way it tackles ghosts and necromancers, and goes beyond the concept of helping ghosts settle their affairs. I also have reanimation, which is using ghosts to animate corpses back to life, and I did something different with witches, giving them the power to draw out living energy as well as handle dead energy, thus calling them dead witches. My ghosts don’t just stay ghosts either; they can turn into rampaging monsters if their affairs aren’t dealt with in a timely manner. I took concepts we all know well (ghosts, necromancers, and witches), and tried to put a different spin on them from what I’ve seen before. And hopefully that makes my book unique.

4. Which character in your novel do you relate to the most, and why?

Definitely Selene. She has a bit of a wild side, which I also have, and I also lent her my  sense of humor a little. She may get herself in trouble from time to time but ultimately  she is trying to do good and be helpful where she can, so though it might seem like she  doesn’t care, she really does. She just does things in her own way and I can relate to that.

5. Is there anything else you want to share with our blog readers?

Just that I hope they will check out Affairs of the Dead! I plan for it to be a series, so there will definitely be a second book, which I am working on right now.

Lightning round!
Favorite movie? It’s so hard for me to pick my *favorite* of something because I like so many things! So I don’t have a favorite movie, just a lot that I really like. I tend to go for those fast paced action movies, as well as movies based off comic books, so almost anything DC or Marvel related I’d be into. I also like silly comedies and period romances like Pride and Prejudice.
Favorite TV show? I’m a TV junkie so I have many, some are: Vampire Diaries, Scandal, Revenge, Once Upon a Time, and True Blood.
Favorite food? Anything that tastes good! Seriously, I love any good food, and I especially love dessert!
Favorite animal? Birds; my first pet was a parrot, and after that I always had parakeets as pets.
Favorite color? Blue.
Favorite book? The Sound of Waves and Wuthering Heights are a couple favorites.
Print or ebook? Both, but I favor print books more.

A SUREFIRE WAY
by J.T. Bock
Page Count: 393 Genre: Paranormal Romance, Romantic Suspense, Humor

UltraAgent Surefire’s plan is simple: Capture the transhuman thief Raven. Win back the respect of her father. Get a raise.

Easy, right?

Except Surefire just broke the number one rule of her employer, UltraSecurity, a niche security firm that solves crimes committed by genetically enhanced humans like Raven. She trailed Raven into a warehouse without backup. And something more powerful than any transhuman is waiting inside.

Raven’s plan is simple: Atone for his past crimes. Return stolen spiritual artifacts to restore the world’s balance. Don’t get caught by UltraSecurity.

Easy, right?

Until a spunky UltraSecurity agent is suddenly on his tail, although Raven wishes she was on … well, never mind … he can’t get distracted from his mission. Because she’s followed him into a warehouse filled with his reclaimed relics, and Raven’s ex-partner in crime is about to unleash a supernatural-sized complication into his plan.

His old partner has accidentally summoned an Aztec god who will destroy the world unless Raven stops this spirit with a superiority complex. To do this, Raven must team up with Surefire and reveal the truth about his powers, exposing her to a force that can either save the world or destroy them both.

Following Raven into that warehouse throws Surefire into a surreal world filled with moody gods, day-glo skulls, dizzying dimensional portals, maniacal half-roach magicians, and a sexy thief who is more than he appears under his snug t-shirt. Is Raven a criminal, or is he working for a higher power? Surefire needs to be certain, because if she joins him on this mission, she’ll have to surrender everything she believed in for a surefire way to save the world, discover her destiny and find true love.

Thirty years in the future, a sinister New York City exists in permanent darkness.

After the encounter, Nadine’s visions change to those of eerie fates, gods she’s never heard of, demons with sharp claws they are not too timid to use...and instructions.

To discover if she’s losing her mind, Nadine follows the vague directions—with the real, rude and reluctant Victor—leading to a man who knows it all: Nadine can restore an ancient creed by unveiling the clues on her visions, and bring sunlight and peace to the world again. But that’s only if the demons and the other evil forces behind the darkness don’t stop her first.

MY REVIEW

It took me a while to get into Destiny Gift. In fact, there were a few times in the first half of the book that I seriously considered putting it down for good. Eventually, though, it did begin to grab me, and I'm glad I finished it. I'll even admit that when my Kindle hit 100%, I was a tad disappointed that the story was over—and I mean that as a good thing. This wasn't a cliffhanger. It was more like a complete volume of a larger set of volumes. Some threads of the plot were concluded, but bigger issues remained. I may pick up the next book just to see how it all turns out.

Let's talk about things I disliked:

As I said above, the beginning was slow. Nadine is in college and has recurring dreams about a cute boy, who she suspects she might be in love with—even though he doesn't exist. She spends a good bit of time thinking about this imaginary boy. Then she meets another cute boy, a bad boy who's dark and intriguing and seems to like her. Nadine makes plans to go to a party; she goes to work; she goes to school events...You see where I'm going with this? I just wasn't interested in any of that.

The world-building was also a problem for me. Nadine's world is a mess of darkness, danger, and giant bats. Her school is enclosed with security guards around the border to keep the students safe. Only...I didn't see much of the danger. It was mostly talk and dreams and memories. I just wasn't convinced that the world had gone to crap. The one exception to this was that I experienced Nadine's being attacked by some bats—only the scene just left my wondering why the bats never followed her onto campus. Sure, there's a gate around the campus, but a gate can't keep out bats.

What I liked:

Nadine's visions aren't always about the boy she might be in love with. Sometimes, they're about gods and goddesses fighting. I guessed what this meant well before Nadine did, but I still enjoyed the journey as she figured it out. Toward the end of the book, the action really picks up with some chase scenes and torture. This was much more down my alley than going to school and work and dreaming about boys. I was intrigued.

There was solid sexual tension between Nadine and the bad boy. I liked him and wanted him and Nadine to get together.

Conclusion:

Overall, I ended up enjoying Destiny Gift. I recommend it for paranormal romance readers, especially those who are into young adult and new adult. There weren't any sexy times here, so even though it's labeled new adult, I wouldn't suggest going into it looking for all the hot sex usually associated with that genre.
